How to win at Ludo: 8 tips that actually work
3 November 2026 · Jakoz Gaming
Dice decide a lot in Ludo, but good players win more often because they make better choices with every roll. Here's what they do.
1. Get two tokens out early
With only one token on the board, a bad roll wastes your turn. Two tokens give you a choice on every roll.
2. Use the star squares
Tokens on star squares and start squares can't be captured. Stop there when an opponent is up to 6 squares behind you.
3. Count the danger
Before you move, check which opponents are 1–6 squares behind where you'll land. The fewer, the safer.
4. Capture when you can
Sending an opponent's token home costs them a whole lap and gives you an extra roll. A capture is usually the best move on the board.
5. Don't chase with your only token
Running after an opponent leaves your token exposed. Capture when it's there, but don't take big risks for it.
6. Hurry into the home column
Once a token reaches your coloured home column it can never be captured. Move it in as soon as you can.
7. Spread your risk
Don't push one token far ahead while the others wait at home. A balanced board means one capture can't ruin your game.
8. Use your 6s well
A 6 gives you another roll. Bring a new token out with it when you have room, or make a big jump to safety.
