Sun vs Hokm in Baloot: the difference and how scoring works
3 November 2026 · Jakoz Gaming
Every Baloot hand starts with one big decision: Sun or Hokm. They change which cards are strong and how many points the hand is worth.
Hokm: one suit is trumps
When someone calls Hokm, the suit of the face-up card (or, in the second round, the suit they name) becomes trumps. Trumps beat every other suit, and inside the trump suit the order changes to J, 9, A, 10, K, Q, 8, 7. The jack of trumps is worth 20 points and the 9 is worth 14.
Sun: no trumps, double value
In Sun there are no trumps: the highest card of the suit that was led wins. The order is A, 10, K, Q, J, 9, 8, 7 in every suit. Sun beats Hokm when players are choosing, and a Sun hand is worth more.
Card points (abnat)
| Card | Normal / Sun | Trump (Hokm) |
|---|---|---|
| Jack | 2 | 20 |
| 9 | 0 | 14 |
| Ace | 11 | 11 |
| 10 | 10 | 10 |
| King | 4 | 4 |
| Queen | 3 | 3 |
The last trick adds 10. So all the cards in a Sun hand add up to 130, and in a Hokm hand to 162.
From card points to game points
- Sun hand = 26 game points (card points divided by 5).
- Hokm hand = 16 game points (card points divided by 10).
- Projects add the same way: Sira 20, 50, 100 and, in Sun, four aces (400) = 40 game points.
- Baloot (K and Q of trumps) adds 2 game points and can't be lost.
The buyers must win
The team that bought must finish with more than the other team (cards plus projects). If they don't, the other team takes the whole hand and all projects. If one team wins all 8 tricks it's Kaboot: 44 points in Sun, 25 in Hokm.
Which should you call?
Call Sun with aces and guarded 10s across several suits. Call Hokm when you hold the J and 9 of the face-up suit. Try both safely in Baloot practice on Jakoz, or read the full Baloot rules.
